Restore Old Family Photos with AI (Free & Easy)
That shoebox of faded prints holds your family's story. AI tools can sharpen faces, fix scratches, add color, and even gently animate a photo of a parent or grandparent.
New to AI? Start with AI Basics in Plain English.
Tools to try
- MyHeritage photo tools, including Deep Nostalgia, which animates faces in still photos
- Google Photos editing tools on your phone
Step by step
- Get a good copy. Lay the photo flat by a window (no flash) and take a straight-on photo with your phone, or use a scanner.
- Upload it to the photo tool and choose "enhance," "repair," or "colorize."
- Compare before and after. Keep the original, because AI sometimes guesses details wrong.
- Write the story behind it with AI:
Help me write a short, warm caption for an old family photo. It shows [who], taken around [year] at [place]. Here's what I remember: [memories]. Write 3 sentences my grandchildren would enjoy.
- Share or print the photo as a gift, a calendar, or a small photo book.
Turn it into a memory project
Interview me, one question at a time, about my childhood so I can write a short memoir for my grandchildren. Start with where I grew up.
Before uploading, check each service's privacy settings. Only upload photos you're comfortable storing online.
Safety rule: Never type your Social Security number, Medicare number, passwords, or bank account numbers into an AI tool. Always check health and money answers with a professional.
