Doctor Visit Prep with AI: One-Page Symptom Summary
Appointments go fast. AI can help you show up with a clear summary and your most important questions, so nothing is forgotten.
New to AI? Start with AI Basics in Plain English.
You're not alone: according to AARP, 41% of adults over 50 who use AI have already asked it a health question (AARP). AI helps you prepare; your doctor makes the decisions.
Step by step
- Jot down notes in your own words: what you've noticed, when it started, and what makes it better or worse. Leave out your name, birthdate, and ID numbers.
- Paste this into ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot:
Help me prepare for a doctor's appointment. Turn my notes into: (1) a short timeline of my symptoms, (2) a list of my current medicines and doses as I've written them, (3) the 5 most important questions to ask my doctor, in order. Do not diagnose me. Keep it to one page in large, plain language. My notes: [type your notes here]
- Read it over and fix anything that's wrong. You know your body best.
- Print it or keep it on your phone, and hand a copy to the nurse at check-in.
- After the visit, use the prompt below to make a simple to-do list from what your doctor said.
Here are my notes from my doctor visit: [notes]. Make a simple checklist of what I need to do next and questions to call back about. Don't add medical advice beyond what's written.
Not medical advice. In an emergency, call 911. Always follow your doctor's and pharmacist's guidance.
Safety rule: Never type your Social Security number, Medicare number, passwords, or bank account numbers into an AI tool. Always check health and money answers with a professional.
